How we grow
through GSCG

Principle one commits us to growth. This is what we mean by the word, why being present is what turns an experience into growth, and how it runs from the moment you apply through to long after you leave.

The definition

What growth is

Growth is the new associations built between emotions, thoughts, and sensations that can be referenced or built upon in future situations and experiences.

Growth is not a credential you earn once. It is connective tissue you lay down. Every experience, especially a new or hard one, creates fresh links between what you feel, what you think, and what you sense in your body. Those links become reference points. The next time you face something similar, or something entirely new, you have more to draw on and more to build from.

This is why experience itself has value. The experience is the raw material. You do not grow in the abstract. You grow by moving through situations that lay down new associations you can carry forward.

It is also why mindfulness sits at the foundation. Mindfulness is attention to emotions, thoughts, and sensations in the present moment. That attention is what lets the associations form clearly and lets you reach them later. Two people can go through the same experience and one grows more, because they were present enough to actually register what they felt, thought, and sensed. Presence is what turns experience into growth.

The whole relationship

Growth runs the whole lifecycle

Growth is not only what happens once you are in. It runs the length of the relationship.

Before you are in

The application is already a growth moment. You evaluate yourself, you try to align your experience with an opportunity, and you practice articulating the value you could add. That is real work, and it pays off whether or not you get the role, because you will be doing exactly that for every future opportunity. Open experiences count too. Case competitions are open to everyone. Guest speakers are open to everyone. Each is a chance to form new associations without needing a position first.

While you are in

Fixed roles like consultant, and leadership roles, carry their own growth. You arrive with qualifications, then you test them against real work. You will fall short in certain ways. Those gaps are not the failure of the position. They are the growth the position exists to give you. Leadership adds another layer: the growth that comes from being responsible for other people and for outcomes.

After you leave

Growth does not stop at graduation. Staying connected is itself an opportunity. When you communicate your GSCG experience to others, you are reflecting on it, and reflection lays down new associations of its own. Telling someone what you learned is often how you find out what you learned.

So GSCG is three things at once: the process of trying to engage, the process of engaging, and the process of reflecting on it afterward. Membership is only the middle piece.

When it does not go to plan

Error and grace

A big part of growing through GSCG is understanding error, your own and other people's.

Error is information, not indictment. When you make a mistake, it is not a verdict on you. When GSCG or another person makes one, it is not personal. Everyone carries error, the same way you do. Seeing that clearly is what builds context and empathy.

Grace follows from that. Grace to yourself when you fall short, grace to others when they do, and grace to GSCG as an organization that is also still learning. Some things sit outside your control. Other people miss things, just as you do. Holding that with equanimity rather than blame is a form of growth on its own.

There is a direct tie back to the core definition here. When something does not go the way you wanted, the emotions, thoughts, and sensations run high. That is exactly when the strongest new associations form. Met with grace and attention rather than blame, the moments that go wrong are often where the most growth is available. Things not going to plan is not the interruption of growth. It is frequently the source of it.
